Treatment of a Knocked Out (Avulsed) Tooth

1. If the tooth is visibly contaminated, rinse gently with water. DO NOT SCRAPE OR ABRADE THE ROOT SURFACE!!!

2. Place the tooth back into the socket immediately if possible. To accomplish this, orient the tooth by matching it to the adjacent teeth, as if you are fitting a piece of a jigsaw puzzle into place. Then gently place the tooth into the empty socket until it appears to be lined up with the teeth around it. If immediate replantation is not possible, place the tooth in the best transport medium available.

3. A balanced solution such as Hank's Balanced Salt Solution, or Save-A-Tooth is the best transport medium. The next best solution is milk, which is usually easily accessible. If these are not available, you can use saline, and as a last resort use water.

4. Every effort should be made to minimize the amount of time the tooth is left dry. Storage in a balanced salt solution or milk can preserve the tooth for up to three hours.

5. See a dentist as soon as possible for evaluation and stabilization.
