These instructions apply to
the surgical procedure just completed. They are designed to instruct
you in procedures that will minimize postsurgical discomfort and inform
you of situations that may possibly require special attention.
|
If you are a smoker, it is
most important that you do not smoke for the first 3 days after surgery.
Smoking greatly increases the chance of postsurgical infection and
discomfort, and will retard the healing process.
|
It is not unusual to have
a certain amount of discomfort for a day or two following your surgical
procedure. In many instances, two aspirin (Anacin, Bufferin, Tylenol
or Excedrin) taken every three hours, but not more than 10 tablets
daily, will be sufficient to relieve discomfort. You will be given
a prescription for a more potent medication to insure you a mild postsurgical
recovery period. Please use this medication only if needed for the
control of severe discomfort.
|
Minor swelling may follow
your surgical procedure. To prevent or minimize swelling, it is advisable
to place an ice pack over the area; 25 minutes on and 5 minutes off,
for the next 6 hours. Remember, the utilization of cold compress to
reduce swelling is only effective if used immediately after the surgical
procedure. If, after the first 24 hours, swelling has occurred, apply
heat to the involved area in the form of wet or dry compresses as
often as it is convenient.
|
A small amount of bleeding
is all that is necessary to discolor your saliva. DO NOT be alarmed,
as this is normal. If excessive or continuous bleeding occurs:
- Discontinue all rinsing.
- Sit up in an erect position (Do not lie down).
- Apply a moistened tea bag to the immediate area for 20 minutes.
(Repeat if necessary).
|
If the bleeding continues,
please do not hesitate to call this office.
|
The dressing (which acts as
a bandage) is used to protect the surgical site and help reduce discomfort.
If small pieces fall off, it is of no concern unless the area has
become uncomfortable. If large portions of the dressing fall off,
please call this office.
|
Do not eat on the side of
the mouth that was operated upon for a period of two days. Avoid hot
food and liquids. A liquid diet may be used at first but remember,
adequate nutrition is essential for healing. Diets rich in quality
protein, Vitamin C and Vitamin B complex are especially desirable.
Foods such as liver, meat, eggs, milk and citrus fruits, as well as
whole grain or enriched cereals are recommended. (Metrecal, Carnation
Instant Breakfast, Yogurt and cottage cheese with fruit are excellent
and easy to digest).
|
Please do not rinse your mouth
for at least 12 hours after surgery. 12 hours it is advisable to rinse
your mouth with warm salt water. Rinse gently, do not swish. Avoid
commercial mouthwashes.
|
Antibiotics may be prescribed
in your surgical procedure. It is to your advantage to take all prescribed
medications (antibiotics, discomfort mediations) as close to the advised
time schedule as is possible. It is usually advisable not to take
medications on an empty stomach as nausea may result. (This is a general
rule, there are exceptions).
|
You are now aware of the significance
of plaque and the importance of plaque control in the success of your
periodontal therapy. Although it is not advisable to brush the dressing,
it is important that you continue to practice plaque control procedures
in all other areas.
|
If any questions or problems
occur, please do not hesitate to call our office.
